Urban Fijian Indigenous Families’ Positive and Negative Diet, Eating and Food Purchasing Experiences During the COVID 19 Safety Protocols

The Greater Suva Urban Area (GSUA) is the most densely populated area in Fiji and was greatly affected by second wave of COVID-19 outbreak. This study explores how lockdown other safety protocols impacted diets, eating behaviour food purchasing iTaukei (indigenous Fijian) families living GSUA. In-depth interviews with 13 mothers from diverse socio-economic occupational backgrounds highlight that loss income related to insecurity, which also access balanced meals dietary diversity. Women noted positive changes, including (1) reduced consumption red processed meat, (2) increased fruits vegetables, (3) reduction out greater reliance on home-cooked meals, (4) wastage, (5) increase home gardening, (6) concern for health well-being. Unhealthy behaviours were recorded, energy-dense foods, cooking baking unhealthy snacking, replacing dinner tea, snacks sugary foods. These findings raise concerns about long-term effects COVID19 well-being provide insights into opportunities promoting healthier lifestyles, better management resources, enhancing security.
